When planning your Socotra trip, it is important to consider two different sets of regulations for flying your drone: transit regulations in Saudi Arabia and permit requirements in Socotra.
Saudi Arabia Transit Regulations: Travelers are prohibited from entering Saudi Arabia with drones unless they possess a special permit which residents may obtain upon application through a website on the official portal. You may travel to Socotra by transit and carry your drone as baggage with this policy:
- Airport customs will store your drone upon arrival in Saudi Arabia where you will be provided with a receipt.
- There are no fees, penalties, or forms to submit.
- Upon checking in for your flight to Socotra, simply turn in your receipt at customs and retrieve your drone to get ready for your departure.
Socotra Drone Permit Requirements: It is now required that all visitors to the island with a drone apply for an official local permit; this has been in effect since October, 2024. $100 to acquire the local permit. The cash amount must be present on you and given upon landing in Socotra airport.
Your local tour operator will submit the request to the local officials for on-arrival, same-day, approval. Specific, restricted, areas in Socotra are forbidden by law to aerial filming. Always communicate with your local guide before choosing a destination on the island to film.
